I thoroughly enjoyed this little novella. After reading the book blurb, I figured the story would follow a certain formula. I was looking forward to the read, even though I expected it to be a bit predictable. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the story wasn't anything like I expected it to be. Furthermore, although this is one of those stories where the protagonists meet and are in love within hours, it is written in such a way that by the time Anne Marie and Jude get their HEA, there was not a doubt in my mind that they genuinely loved each other. Both characters are well drawn and relatable.Anne Marie is a particularly sympathetic character. The poor thing has had a very hard life...and I do mean hard. The latest difficulty she has to overcome, is preventing the bank from foreclosing on her farm. Out of sheer desperation, she sends for a mail order husband. By the time Jude shows up on her doorstep, bearing a letter he promised a dying man he'd deliver to her, poor Anne Marie is at her wits end...and is way overdue for some happiness. Despite all the difficulties she's had in life, Anne Marie is a strong woman. I loved the fact that she wouldn't allow anyone to push her around...not even Jude when he went all "Marshal" on her! There is an instant attraction between the Jude and Anne Marie, but before they can approach anything that even resembles a friendship, much less a relationship, they must overcome certain misunderstandings.
Jude, a seasoned lawman who is normally up on his game, becomes so addlepated around Anne Marie, that he behaves more like a rookie than the experienced Marshal that he is. LOL This story is short, sweet, and completely engaging. It's the second book I've read by this author; the first was "The Not Quite Mail-Order Bride." I thoroughly enjoyed that story, but IMO, this one is much better. I mean this book even has an epilogue (I LOVE epilogues!) The book does need some editing to give it polish. There are several mistakes, including missing words such as he, it, a, and so on. Furthermore, a number of times incorrect words are used, such as though for thought, diverge for divulge, and the like. However, despite the technical errors, this was an extremely enjoyable read for me. I loved it and would recommend it. BTW this is a squeaky clean romance. Happy reading!

Unlikely Substitute MailOrder Husbands MailOrder Matches edition by Leah Atwood Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Leah Atwood has written a short story that will be enjoyed by its readers. A handsome US Marshall carrying out a dying man's last wish didn't think he would find the woman of his dreams. A young woman only twenty and seven was at a crossroad that looked bleak but what would happen when she was delivered a letter. Had her luck changed? This book can easily be read in an hour or so, because you will be turning pages trying to find out what happens next.
It always surprises me when an author manages to bring depth to characters in short novellas. Not an easy task. The short length does affect the flow of the storyline at one point, causing it to feel rushed and losing the natural feel. It quickly recovers however. There are a few editing errors but not enough to be a deal breaker. It is one of those instant attraction, electric zing, feel good stories. Books are like music. They fit moods. Mystery, suspense, fantasy... just like music I love many genres. This story fit today's mood. If you're not in the mood for a formula, feel good, clean, quick story, keep looking. If you want a short and frivolous mind vacation with a guaranteed happy ending you just found it.
I'll be honest, I usually like my stories w/a bit of heat, and this one had ZERO. With that said, it was a sweet tale of love lost; frustration; lies; trust betrayed & love found again. When the h tries to make the best of her life, which has been turned up-side down, she finds she has more strength than she ever thought. The H finds life & love stumbles into his life when he least expected.
If you're looking for a good story w/no drama or heat about life & love, this short tale is worth your time.
UNLIKELY SUBSTITUTE (MAIL-ORDER HUSBANDS) by Leah Atwood is roughly 43 pages (on my , minus front- and back-matter). True to its rating, it's a wholesome (rated G) romance, free of language and sexual content.
The Book Description/blurb does a great job capturing the essence of the story and outlining the plot. As with romances, it's evident what the ending will be (we hope)...an uplifting, optimistic ending with the hero and heroine happy together (hopefully for more than just the present). That's a given. What we don't know is how the story will progress to get us to that point.
I enjoyed the different twists on the ever-popular mail-order bride theme letters playing a key role in the development of the story, a husband sent for (rather than a bride). It was enjoyable watching Jude and Anne Marie interact and find not only attraction but affection and even budding love for one another when they're shut away together during a winter storm. The time spent away from one another, with a rewarding epilogue makes that affection seem more real....as the intervening months away from each other tend to put reality into perspective.
This novelette contained editing problems a more thorough proofread or editor would have caught. I can't help but notice when possessives are misused where plurals belong (parent's deaths vs. parents' deaths--there IS a difference). Mistakes like using 'diverged' (to have separated from a main route and taken another) where the correct word--'divulge' (make known private or sensitive info)--belonged...will always catch my attention. It's a most unfortunate curse I can't seem to ignore. Missing letters 'all that matter' should've been 'all that matters.' The book needed another set of fresh eyes to proofread with an eye for detail OR a competent editor. This brief list is a mere sample of the errors a good editor would've caught.
Those complaints aside, this novelette will be enjoyed by fans of mail-order bride romances, wholesome historical romances, and fans of romances set on the western frontier.
